History Southern Sierra Boys and Girls Club's began in 1999 when a group of concerned citizens in Ridgecrest, CA realized the importance of After-School programming for youth. The Southern Sierra Boys and Girls Club (SSBGC) worked closely with community partners to develop the local Club and its programs. It represents a coordinated effort among the Sierra Sands Unified School District, the City of Ridgecrest, the Police Department, civic groups, as well as other non-profit agencies. SSBGC opened at the Las Flores Elementary November 2002, serving 100 children. A Summer Program was held in 2003 at the Club House on Warner St. The Second After-School Program began at Las Flores in the fall of 2003 and Club membership reached 250. This service-enriched youth development program remains unparalleled in Ridgecrest. Southern Sierra Boys & Girls Club serves all youth ages 6-18, with a special focus on those from disadvantaged circumstances. The Club offers children things they need, and want; a safe and positive environment where they can be themselves, fun games and activities, interesting and constructive learning that channels their energy and ambition into challenging pursuits, and healthy relationships with peers and adult professionals. The Club is centered on a youth development strategy that builds confidence and self-esteem and fosters a sense of belonging, competence, usefulness and influence. The Southern Sierra Boys & Girls Club continues to grow. New programs are always being developed and implemented. Some of our goals include creating a Teen Center at the Club House and expanding the After-School program to an additional site. We are very excited to be a part of this community and look forward to where we're going together.
